This piece began to crack during the early stages of drying. Rather than discard it, I let it continue, curious what the kiln would do with a wound already forming. The crack held. What came out the other side is a vessel stitched back together with copper wire, the break left visible rather than hidden, the repair as much a part of the piece as the form itself.
 
The body is glazed in a cratered, volcanic magma glaze that catches light unevenly across its surface, while the interior and rim are finished in a glossy black that pools and reflects, drawing the eye straight to the fracture at center.
 
A wide, low pedestal form. Functional as a vase, though the piece is, first, a record of survival.
